On January 27, 2025, Selena Gomez took to Instagram to share an emotional video saying that she was distressed upon seeing mass deportations of undocumented immigrants recently under the President Donald Trump administration. In the since-deleted video, Gomez tearfully apologized, saying, “All my people are getting attacked. I’m so sorry. There’s nothing I can do.”
The video went viral really quickly, eliciting a mix of both support as well as criticism. Some commended Gomez for her empathy and her willingness to use her platform to highlight the plight of immigrant families. Others called her out as being out of touch and indulging in performative activism.
Among the most vocal critics were conservative commentator Tomi Lahren and former ICE Director Tom Homan, who defended the administration’s actions and dismissed Gomez’s concerns.
Gomez who is of Mexican descent, has been an advocate for immigrant rights for a long time.
She even made the Netflix documentary “Living Undocumented,” in 2019 and wrote an opinion piece for Time magazine, detailing her family’s experience with immigration and urging compassion toward immigrants.
Although after the backlash, Selena Gomez took down the video and released a follow-up message, commenting on how showing empathy wasn’t acceptable enough for some people.
